Peaky Blinders director Otto Bathurst has said a film is in the works.
With season five of the period drama set to be released in 2019, fans are keen to find out what happens next to Tommy Shelby and his gang.
Filming for the upcoming season is underway, and from the way Cillian Murphy is arranging his face into some of the most intense of stares in the official photos, it seems like Shelby is going to be under some stress.
After first gracing our television screens on BBC Two back in 2013, it was announced earlier this year Peaky Blinders would be making the big move to BBC One for their fifth season.
However, it seems as though the production could be moving once again, as Bathurst, who directed three episodes of the BBC show’s first series, has said a script is being written in order to take the series to the big screen.
Speaking to Yahoo! Movies, he revealed:
I think it’s actually being written. I think Steve, Steve Knight the writer, I think they’re planning something, yeah.
There’s been no mention of the plot of the film or who it would feature as of yet, but star Murphy seems intrigued about the idea of taking the Blinders to the movies.
Talking about the prospect of a film in an interview with Esquire, he said:
I think Steve [Knight] has some ideas. You’d have to be careful, but I’d be curious to do it.
Some new faces are joining the cast of Peaky Blinders for season five, a couple of who are no stranger to the big screen themselves.
Hunger Games and Me Before You star Sam Claflin will be appearing among the waistcoat-clad characters, as well as Split’s Anya Taylor-Joy and Brian Gleeson along with other newbies.
While fans wait to find out the storyline of the Peaky Blinders movie, they can focus their attention and excitement on the new drama Shelby will face as his family and their troubles move into the 1930s.
A BBC description for season five explains:
Series five finds the world thrown into turmoil by the financial crash of 1929. Opportunity and misfortune are everywhere.
When Tommy Shelby MP (Cillian Murphy) is approached by a charismatic politician with a bold vision for Britain, he realises that his response will affect not just his family’s future but that of the entire nation.
In an interview with Birmingham Mail, creator Steve Knight revealed more details about the highly anticipated season, saying:
We are going into the 30s now. There is so much stuff happening, so why not finish the job?
The depression and the rise of fascism form part of the storyline.
It is setting those things up. In the 30s across Europe and Britain there was the rise of fascism.
Unfortunately there’s no release date for the movie in these early stages, but hopefully fans will learn more about the project before too long.
