The year is 2016. Nuclear war has all but wiped out the human race since it began 20 years ago. What is left of humanity live nomadic lives, fighting over the few scraps of food planet Earth has left. This is a world where Pokemon Red and Blue were never made.

Thankfully, we live in a world where Pokemon Red and Blue were made, and where a harsh nuclear winter hasn’t buggered us all over. Yet. I’m looking at you, North Korea.

Dorkly

Anyway, it’s been 20 years since Red and Blue first graced our Gameboy screens, and the games’ programmer and composer Junichi Masada has explained how they almost never happened.

During the six years it took to make Red and Green (released as Blue outside of Japan) the programmer reminisces about how his computers would constantly break.

Masada says:

I sure am glad I fixed those computers back then. If I hadn’t, the original Red and Green games might never have come out. That’s a scary thought!

I would sit in front of my computer from morning to night, programming the games and coming up with all sorts of ideas. I never thought I would still be doing it 20 years later!

Having already saved humanity once in his lifetime, Masada did state that he has a “strong urge” to make another game. Better get on it mate – I’m not sure how much longer we can last.
