There is a growing concern for the safety and well being of a reggae and dancehall legend, DJ Derek. He was officially reported missing last Thursday, but his family say he has not been seen for weeks.

Police have confirmed that the 73-year-old Bristolian, real name Derek Serpell-Morris, has not used his bank account since the beginning of July. It is believed he has not gone abroad as he doesn’t hold a current passport.

He shot to notoriety in 2006 after quitting his job as an accountant to escape the “domestic hell” and realise his dream of being a professional DJ. He went on to play a plethora of club nights and festivals – such as Glasto and The Big Chill – in a career that has spanned over a decade thus far.

In 2012 he received the Bristol Lord Mayor’s medal for his “outstanding” contribution to music in the city. In 2013 he completed his final tour after announcing his retirement. I was lucky enough to catch him in Leeds and his performance didn’t disappoint.

A search party, made up of the DJ’s loyal family, friends and fans, is currently retracing his steps from Corn Street, where he was last seen, to his home.

“We are extremely worried. The longest he’s ever been away is about a week and he’s always in touch with the family” Jenny Griffiths, his great niece, told the BBC yesterday.
