TwitterThe driver of the car which sent British indie band Viola Beach to their deaths ‘acted deliberately’, police say.
The four band members and their manager died when their car plunged 25m off a highway bridge into a canal in Sweden earlier this month.
The accident happened in Sodertalje near Stockholm, and new reports say that the crash may have been deliberate, as an inquest into the driver’s death say he had no alcohol or drugs in his system.
The Warrington-based band were returning from their first gig in Europe when the collision occurred shortly after 2am on February 13.
Aftonbladet NewspaperNew CCTV footage of the run-up to the crash, viewed and reconstructed by Sweden’s Aftonbladet newspaper, shows the car driving behind a lane of cars waiting for the bridge barriers to open, then swerving out onto a narrow hard shoulder, crashing through the barriers and accelerating towards the bridge, The Daily Mail reports.
Witness Kent Uddén, 49, told the paper:
We did not see any break lights, we talked about it afterwards.
When he goes through one barrier, there is no doubt that this is something you should not pass. It’s obvious.
But we saw no indication that he was breaking. We would have seen the break lights, it was so dark.
FacebookLars Berglund, who is leading the investigation into the accident told Aftonbladet newspaper: “As far as I can see, most of them had already been killed up there on the bridge,” he said. “It looks like the driver was acting intentionally.”
He added that he now believes that most of the band members had been killed when their car collided with the bridge.
