A retired judge saw her dog shot and killed by a Topeka police officer, leading to questions over if the dog should’ve been shot at all.

The officer responded to an activated security alarm at the retired judge’s house and when her dog rushed at him, he shot and killed the animal, who then died in front of the judge.

Police Chief James Brown said that while the officer’s actions were justifiable, the police were looking into other ways to deal with animals, that did not involve killing them.

Officers will apparently be made to undergo animal training, in order to make sure that such incidents don’t happen in the future, with changes to protocol, including using pepper spray and alternative weapons to a gun being looked into.
