We have not yet seen dummy nor rattle of the newest little prince, but Baby Sussex is already one of the rising stars of 2019.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are a modern and forward thinking couple – as far as members of the Royal family go – bringing a warmer, more approachable face to a very prim and proper British institution.
Many of Prince Harry’s likable qualities are attributed to his late mother, Princess Diana, known as the ‘People’s Princess’. Even those with no real interest in the monarchy were touched by her kind heart and vivacious zest for life.
Like his mother before him, Prince Harry has a bit of a rebellious streak, and has met his match with wife Meghan.
A shared sense of renouncing stuffiness and breathing new life into the palace is reflected in the new parents’ happy statement:
Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Sussex was safely delivered of a son at 0526hrs this morning. The baby weighs 7lbs 3oz. The Duke of Sussex was present for the birth.
The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh, The Prince of Wales, The Duchess of Cornwall, The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Lady Jane Fellowes, Lady Sarah McCorquodale and Earl Spencer have been informed and are delighted with the news.
The Duchess’s mother, Doria Ragland, who is overjoyed by the arrival of her first grandchild, is with Their Royal Highnesses at Frogmore Cottage. Her Royal Highness and the baby are both doing well.
At first glance, you may think there is nothing particularly punk rock about this elegant, regal statement. You’d be wrong.
Harry and Meghan have chosen to mention Princess Diana’s side of the family – Lady Jane Fellowes, Lady Sarah McCorquodale and Earl Spencer – recognizing them as important figures in the life of their newborn baby.
When Prince William and Kate Middleton’s babies were born, there was no mention of the Spencer side of the family. However, Prince William has previously spoken about how he keeps his mother’s memory alive for his children in other ways.
Harry and Meghan are keen to pay tribute to Princess Diana’s siblings with this sweet statement, and indeed to the proud grandmother Lady Di would no doubt have been.
Congratulations to Prince Harry and Megan Markle on the birth of their baby boy!
