Australian golfer Jarrod Lyle has decided to stop active treatment for his third bout of leukaemia.

He will now spend his final days with his wife Bryony and children Lusi and Jemma in palliative care.

The PGA Tour veteran, 36, was initially diagnosed at the age of 17 in 1999 which was cured after extensive chemotherapy.

Lyle eventually returned to golfing in 2004, by this point a professional, and won twice on the second-tier Web.com Tour in the U.S. before earning a PGA Tour card in 2009.

He was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia in 2012 after finishing fourth at the Northern Trust Open, beating it again.

However, the cancer returned in July 2017, the Mirror reports.

In a recent Facebook post, Bryony broke the tragic news, writing:

My heart breaks as I type this message. Earlier today Jarrod made the decision to stop active treatment and begin palliative care. He has given everything that he’s got to give, and his poor body cannot take anymore. We’ll be taking him closer to home in the next couple of days so he can finally leave the hospital.

There is simply not enough time to get this message out to everyone individually, so for some of our really close friends and family I cannot apologise enough for breaking the news in this way. We have done our best to ‘control’ the narrative surrounding Jarrod’s illness and treatment, and as more and more people become involved in this final process I’m not sure how much longer this development will remain private.

She added:

Jarrod knows he is loved, and the thousands of prayers and well wishes that have been sent his way have kept him going through some incredibly tough times. But he has reached his limit, and the docs have finally agreed that they can no longer strive for a positive outcome.

My focus as of today is on our girls and doing whatever I can to get them through the challenges ahead. Jarrod will be closer to them very soon, and will spend as much time as he can with them.

When it’s appropriate, I will post details of a memorial service. In the meantime we ask that you respect our privacy at this difficult time.

In 2005 he earned his playing rights in Asia and secured his 2006 playing rights with a 2nd place finish in Macau and Brunei, according to the PGA. 2006 started well with a tied 4th finish and then a 2nd in consecutive weeks, which got him special membership to the Web.com Tour (then the Nationwide tour).

Jarrod finished the season 18th on the Web.com money list which secured his playing rights on the PGA Tour for the first time. He made only three top-25 finishes on the PGA Tour in 2007 and finished 164th on the money list and lost his Tour card. Back on the Nationwide Tour in 2008, he won twice, at the Mexican Open and the Knoxville Open. He finished 4th on the money list and earned his 2009 PGA Tour card.
