Super Mario 64

Super Mario 64 is responsible for consuming countless hours of my life as a child, and probably yours too.

It was amazing, and still is. I can’t believe it’s nearly 20-years-old, if I see it out and about I’ll buy it a pint.

Especially now there’s a way it could pay me back for all those hard-fought hours of lost childhood. If only I was some kind of super-nerd glitch king.

Unfortunately I’m not, but if you are you could be in with a chance of winning $1,000 (£640), all you have to do is work out how to reproduce this glitch.

YouTuber pannenkoek2012 has offered the bounty to anyone who can reproduce this:

It won’t be an easy task. The glitch was discovered by accident by Twitch streamer DOTA_TeaBag on the Tick Tock Clock level, and it involves Mario doing what’s known as an ‘instant vertical warp’, apparently. It’s a technique known as ‘upwarping’, and it was previously only thought to be possible in one location, on a stage leading into a battle with Bowser.

If it can be reproduced this will let speedrunners analyse the code of the game, and discover the exact circumstances that create an upwarp. It could be exploited to improve times on speedruns.

Gamers, go forth and glitch!
