Last night, UFC fighters Robbie Lawler and Rory MacDonald went to war over the welterweight championship in what is being hailed as one of the greatest fights of all time.
The brutal, back-and-forth five round war at UFC 189 in Las Vegas, ended when Lawler earned a gruelling fifth round TKO victory over MacDonald to retain his title.
Lawler was down three rounds to one when he landed the winning punch which completely shattered the nose of MacDonald.
The Fight of the Year candidate earned both men a standing ovation from the rabid crowd inside the MGM Grand Garden Arena.
But the excitement and drama came at a cost for both men, who were immediately taken to hospital to treat some nasty battle wounds, including MacDonald’s gruesome nose injury and Lawler’s split lip and lacerated scalp.
After the fight, MacDonald’s coach, Firas Zahabi, posted a picture of the fighters together in hospital (talk about respect and sportsmanship!), and the extent of their injuries is pretty plain to see.
These images aren’t for the faint of heart!
