After the triumphant return of screen icon Sylvester Stallone to the word of Boxing with Creed, Robert DeNiro is about to dust of his gloves for a new heavy-weight film coming this August.

The Weinstein Company have set a date for the boxing drama Hands of Stone, starring Robert DeNiro and the wonderful Edgar Ramirez (Joy).

Much like Stallone, DeNiro won’t be stepping back into the ring though – DeNiro won a Best Actor Oscar for his leading role in Martin Scorsese’s classic Raging Bullinstead he’s taking on the role of Ray Arcel, the man who trained legendary boxer Roberto Duran, played by Ramirez.

The story focusses on Roberto Duran, who worked his way from a life of poverty in Panama to become one of the greatest boxers of his time, with the film centring on his fight with rival Sugar Ray Leonard.

R&B artist Usher will be playing the bombastic Sugar Ray, which admittedly seems an odd choice given his previous body of work.

The film’s being written and directed by Jonathan Jakubowicz, and the name comes from Duran’s nickname ‘hands of stone’, which he got because of his incredible punching power.

It’s nice to see DeNiro in something worthy of his considerable talents after his disappointing performance in Dirty Grandpa.

Hands of Stone will be in cinemas from August 26 in the U.S., but the UK release date hasn’t been confirmed yet.
