Rock legend Chris Cornell has died unexpectedly at the age of 52.

The Soundgarden and Audioslave lead singer’s representative has confirmed Cornell died on Wednesday night in Detroit after reportedly performing a gig with Soundgarden at the Fox Theatre, as part of the band’s North American headline tour.

In a statement made to The Associated Press, Brian Bumberry described the death as “sudden and unexpected”.

Cornell’s family have asked for privacy during this hard time while they come to terms with the awful news.

A medical examiner is working to determine the cause of death.

Cornell, along with his Soundgarden bandmates were the first grunge artists to be signed to a major label, and without them we may not have had Pearl Jam and Nirvana.

RIP.
