The Russian army has just unveiled its latest bizarre secret weapon in the form of a robotic caterpillar.
Yeah, you heard us right. Its creators are hoping they can roll out the machine for rescue missions to natural and man-made disaster zones, but it could also be potentially used in combat.
The two-metre long MRP-300 will be able to carry hundreds of kilos of rescue kit and can reach speeds of 15mph. It can even scale up vertical walls of up to 1.5 metres.
YouTubeThe bot has been developed by the Defense Ministry’s Main Robotics Research and Test Center and ROKAD- a scientific research centre, The Mirror reports.
It is manually operated and can work in rough terrain because of its unique tracks- allowing it to venture across sand, deep snow and even swamps.
The state of the art kit is also fitted with cameras for defusing bombs and radiation sensors in the case of a nuclear explosion.
PAAn official told Russian newspaper Izvestia that the MRP-300 is currently undergoing factory production, which will run until the end of 2016.
“For rescue, demining and chemical reconnaissance robots working amid the rubble of a combat damaged city, high cross-country capacity is of paramount importance,” military expert Oleg Zheltonozhko added.
