Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds has confirmed that work has begun on the sequel’s script.

Speaking to Chris Hewitt on the Empire podcast, Reynolds admitted they had a story in mind and they’d begun work on the script, saying: “We are on a script, we are well into a script”.

The film’s been a juggernaut at the American box office, taking in one weekend what the last Wolverine movie took in its entire run, and Fox will be anxious to begin work on the sequel.

Reynolds also teased where Deadpool will go next, hinting that he’d like to team the Merc with a Mouth up with his reluctant time travelling buddy, Cable, who almost appeared in the first film.

In fact, despite there being no official word on the sequels plot, Avatar actor Steven Lang has already begun to campaign for the part. He may face tough competition from a surprising contender though, after an incredible piece of fan art, by BossLogicwas released depicting Keira Knightley as the grim faced character.

Reynolds also spoke about the various drafts the Deadpool film went through and the difficulties of dragging the film out of development hell.

He said:

We had endless [conversations about other X-Men]. Taskmaster was in the script originally, too expensive. We had versions where we wanted Hugh Jackman in there, we wanted all kinds of cameos from different people, but it just becomes a big mess of the studio.

We went through such hell developing the script and which X-Men we could keep and which we couldn’t and it just turned into a nightmare. The studio would just say, ‘too expensive, too expensive, too expensive’ to everyone. So we were like well, ‘what about Negasonic Teenage Warhead’ and they said, ‘Negasonic, what?’

The whole interview makes clear quite how much of a passion project Deadpool was for Reynolds, and the intense effort that he put into taking the character off the pages of a comic book and onto the silver screen.

And with the whole world going Deadpool crazy it seems Reynolds’ hard work has paid off…
