Ryan Reynolds is pining for a Guardians of the Galaxy crossover after director James Gunn tweeted his admiration for Deadpool 2.
It’s probably wishful thinking for a situation in which Deadpool would ever crossover into the family-friendly world of the Marvel Cinematic Universe – after all, Wade Wilson’s whole schtick is being R-rated and a sarky little so and so.
However, if anyone can pull off such an ambitious and audacious move it would be Reynolds and Gunn.
Despite being out for over a week the GotG director has only just seen Deadpool 2 and if his Twitter post is anything to go by he seemed rather impressed.
In his Twitter post, Gunn wrote:
Yesterday I finally saw @deadpoolmovie 2, which I loved, and also the brilliant #Revenge. Two completely different, fantastic films – cinema’s alive! Thanks @DavidMLeitch @VancityReynolds @coraliefargeat @MatildaLutz for a great day at the movies.
Naturally, Reynolds, who always seems to be on Twitter when he’s not in front of a camera, responded to Gunn’s praise asking for a ‘Crossover’. The director responded in kind with a ‘Yes, please’.
I think I can speak for all Marvel fans when I say ‘this is something I desperately want to see’. Can you imagine Deadpool in space? It wouldn’t surprise me if the Merc With A Mouth’s razor-sharp, R-rated wit could spark the next intergalactic conflict post-Avengers 4.
But as previously mentioned, the actual likelihood of it happening is slim-to-none at best. While Deadpool is a Marvel character the film studio doesn’t own his film rights. Just like Wolverine, the X-Men and the Fantastic Four, Deadpool belongs to 20th Century Fox – for now.
Don’t lose all hope though, it might happen one day. The best example of this is Spider-Man, despite the film rights being owned by Sony Pictures they have agreed to let Marvel Studios include him within the MCU, while they focus on producing his solo films like 2017’s Spider-Man: Homecoming.
Prior to Gunn’s praise for Deadpool 2, Reynolds has been trolling Avengers: Infinity War directors Joe and Anthony Russo.
Channelling his inner Merc With A Mouth He went after Marvel’s marketing team and the Russos after they requested those who’ve watched Infinity Wars to kindly not let any spoilers out of the bag – particularly on social media. They also included the hashtag #ThanosDemandsYourSilence.
Not one to pass up an opportunity to troll, Reynolds posted his own version of the letter, which asked fans of Deadpool to kindly keep the plot to themselves while taking some tongue-and-cheek shots at the MCU.
The letter says the cast and crew of Deadpool 2 have all ‘given Maximum Effort’ for the last two years, while ‘maintaining the highest level of super secrets’.
Reynolds, aka Wade Wilson, compares it to the way street magician David Blaine ‘catches bullets’ with his teeth and the ever elusive secret KFC recipe.
The letter goes on to say:
Only a handful of people know the film’s true plot. One of them is not Ryan Reynolds.
We are asking that when you see Deadpool 2, don’t say a f*cking word about the fun sh*t in the movie. Cause it’d be super lame to the fact that Deadpool dies in this one. Kidding. Not kidding. Kidding?
The letter ends with the hashtag ‘#WadeWilsonDemandsYourSisterSorryStupidAutoCorrectSilence’, an obvious pot shot at Marvel and the Russo brothers.
Not one to take things lying down, the Russo brothers responded to Reynolds’ jibe with a post of their own:
Well, I guess that settles things, doesn’t it? Let’s be honest, the Infinity Gauntlet trumps all other evil McGuffins thus far in comic book movies. Reynolds too conceded defeat and admitted he ‘deserved that’.
While the Deadpool and MCU franchises are from two different movie universes, one thing which links both films is actor Josh Brolin. In Deadpool 2 he plays the time travelling mutant Cable, while in Infinity War he is the Mad Titan himself, Thanos.
Not one to pass up on an Easter egg/pop culture reference, DP even makes a reference to Brolin’s other comic book character in Deadpool 2.
