At least 15 people attacked the small Kiwi Café in Tbilisi, carrying sausages, meat, and fish, and hurling them at staff and customers.

Police were called to the café after the attack resulted in a mass brawl, which moved outside into the street. Local residents joined in and minor injuries were reported, the Telegraph reports.

The attackers were described as radical ultra-nationalist Georgian Ultras by newspaper Georgia Today, and were able to flee before they could be arrested.

A statement issued on Facebook by the company describes the incident as ‘an anti-vegan provocative action,’ calling the attackers ‘neo-Nazis’ who support ‘fascist ideas’.

The group had reportedly come to the café a month earlier to ask if members of the LGBT community went there.

They pulled out some grilled meat, sausages, and fish and started eating them and throwing them at us, and finally they started to smoke… They were just trying to provoke our friends and disrespect us.

Witnesses said the brawl broke out when the men were told to calm down and leave the café – which is designated as a ‘no smoking’ area.

It’s also reported that law enforcement officials allegedly failed to pursue the extremist group and turned their attention to the café’s staff and customers instead.

Witness Ana Gulisashvili said in a Facebook post:

We are now living in a type of hell where people are insulted for their different style of dress. They are beaten for having piercings and mocked for not eating meat. What is worse is that the police laugh at us and further aggravate the situation instead of protecting the city’s residents.

Other witnesses said the police seemed to mock those in the café and laughed at the victims’ accounts of the incident, according to the Telegraph.

As funny as the thought of sausage-wielding assailants may seem, it’s terrible to think that people are still being attacked for their appearance and beliefs. Here’s to hoping the attackers are caught and shut down.
