2015 saw the ‘Doomsday Clock’ moved forward to three minutes to midnight, suggesting the world was closer to destruction than ever before. Apparently, it’s about to get even worse.
The Independent has reported that the board who set the time on the clock are set to reveal we have moved even closer to ‘midnight’.
The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists was first established at the University of Chicago in 1945 by scientists working on the first atomic weapons. In its current state, the board includes 16 Nobel Laureates. So they do know what they are talking about.
Numerous factors are considered in setting a countdown to our impending doom, including nuclear arms and global warming.
It was a statement released by the Bulletin earlier this month that has led to speculation the clock will be moved in the wrong direction, as far as humanity is concerned.
It read:
Tensions between the United States and Russia that remain at levels reminiscent of the Cold War, the danger posed by climate change, and nuclear proliferation concerns, including the recent North Korean nuclear test, are the main factors influencing the decision about any adjustment that may be made to the Doomsday Clock.
In January 2015, the Doomsday Clock’s minute hand advanced two minutes, moving from five to three minutes before midnight, the closest it has been to catastrophe since the early days of above-ground hydrogen bomb testing.
