Sean Penn met El Chapo for an extraordinary interview and is now under investigation after unwittingly leading Mexican marines to his hideout.
The Hollywood actor turned journo (apparently) interviewed the Mexican drug kingpin at a secret location deep in the Mexican jungle soon after his prison break.
The interview – which was conducted in October – was published in yesterdays edition of Rolling Stone magazine.
He escaped from the maximum security Altiplano jail in July and was recaptured on Friday, with unnamed Mexican officials saying Penn’s secret meeting helped lead them to the fugitive who is now back in the same jail he initially escaped from- probably not the brightest idea.
Their comments ring similar to those made by Attorney General Arely Gomez, who said on Friday that an important part of his recapture was because of El Chapo’s intention to have a biographic film made.
The meeting was apparently arranged by Mexican actress Kate del Castillo with permission of the Sinaloa cartel and took place in the Durango state – the centre of Guzman’s operations – a Mexican official told Associated Press.
The picture of El Chapo meeting Penn is dated back to October 2nd and only a fortnight later Mexican police reported that the cartel leader only just avoided capture, suffering face and leg injuries as he fled.
Will El Chapo finally remain behind bars for good? Well, I wouldn’t put any money on it…
