Most people nowadays recognise Robert Downey Jr as Iron Man, and while there’s hardly been a better combination of actor and character in recent memory, the man is much more.

His film oeuvre includes the absolute stone-cold Shane Black classic Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, the criminally underrated thriller Zodiac and his Oscar-nominated performance of Charlie Chaplin in Chaplin.

Yet one of the gems which people seem to forget, despite it being incredibly popular and acclaimed, is his turn as the greatest detective in the world. No, not Batman, Sherlock Holmes.

The two films, in which Downey Jr stars alongside Jude Law, amassed a massive fanbase for the incredible mix of action, humour and great direction from Guy Ritchie.

However the second film ended with a cliffhanger to end all cliffhangers after *spoilers* Holmes, returns back to London after his apparent death from the fall at Reichenbach.

Thankfully, we now know the film is going ahead, after being in some sort of development limbo for years.

Downey Jr spoke to EW as part of his promotion for Infinity War and said plans are definitely going ahead for Sherlock Holmes 3.

He said:

We’re looking at another Sherlock Holmes, we’re developing Perry Mason for HBO. I still want to do Pinocchio.

The film probably won’t happen for some time, because director Ritchie, is first going to turn his hand at a live-action adaptation of Aladdin, which is in post-production.

The two lead actors’ schedules also need to align – they’e currently tied up with relative MCU projects in Captain Marvel for Jude Law and Infinity War for Downey Jr.

Something tells me though, Iron Man might not make it through the upcoming battle with Thanos, so his schedule might be looking a little bit emptier in the coming years?

The sooner it comes the better, but the game is definitely afoot!
