Dramatic footage of former Top Gear host Richard Hammond crashing his car in the Swiss Alps has emerged online.

Hammond was driving a Rimac Concept One super car through St Gallen in north-east Switzerland for Amazon Prime’s The Grand Tour Season 2 when he lost control of the car and it crashed.

The car rolled down a hill and burst into flames but thankfully Hammond managed to climb out of the car by himself before the vehicle caught fire.

Hammond was then airlifted to a hospital in St Gallen, where doctors treated him for a fractured knee.

The Grand Tour’s executive producer Andy Wilman spoke to The Mirror about the crash, he said:

Everyone is so relieved. If Richard had been a few seconds slower getting out, he would have been incinerated.

I spoke to Richard at the hospital and although he was very shaken, he was conscious and quite lucid. He has had X-rays and a CT scan and is being kept in for observation by the doctors.

All he said about his injuries was that his knee hurt a lot, which I’m not surprised about as it now has bolts in it and it is fractured.

His only worry was about letting his wife and family know he was OK.

Hammond of course is no stranger to car crashes, back in 2006 he was seriously injured after crashing a jet-powered car while travelling at 288 mph.

He was in a coma for two weeks and still reportedly suffers memory loss, depression and difficulties with emotional experiences.
