Apple’s voice activated assistant Siri actually saved the life of a teenager after he was trapped underneath his truck and unable to reach his phone.
18-year-old Sam Ray, from Tennessee, was alone when the truck he was fixing fell on him. Fortunately, however, the teen realised his phone was in his back pocket and he was able to activate Siri using his butt cheeks.
Siri then called the emergency services on Ray’s behalf. Although operators thought it was a prank or accidental call at first, they soon heard the teenager’s cries for help and dispatched assistance after they located Mr Ray’s home in a suburb of Nashville by triangulating the signal from his mobile phone.
Speaking to local newspaper the Tennessean on Friday, Ray said:
This arm was above my head, tangled up. I know it was on the exhaust because it was burnt from here up. I could feel myself slipping. I was starting to accept that I wouldn’t get out.
Rescue workers were able to pull Ray from underneath the truck, and he was airlifted to a nearby hospital. Ray was seriously hurt in the July 2 incident, suffering several broken ribs, a bruised kidney, cuts, a concussion and burns to his left arm, but he has since recovered.
And after Siri’s role in saving his life, it doesn’t look like Ray will be switching to a new phone brand anytime soon!
He added:
I guess I’m stuck with an iPhone for the rest of my life. I owe them that.
