Who doesn’t love a good jail break – in the film sense, I mean – Shawshank Redemption, The Dark Knight, Toy Story 3.
Okay, I know the latter doesn’t technically involve a prison but those toys risked life and limb to escape from Sunnyside daycare, so I’m including it!
When it comes to real life though, I think it’s fair to say that the majority of us probably wouldn’t want an alleged criminal breaking out of prison. But that’s exactly what happened in India recently.
You can watch the moment the man escapes here:
The incident occurred at a police station in the Morena district of Madhya Pradesh, India, on Tuesday September 25.
Local man Seva Kushwaha, 28, had been arrested by police on September 21, accused of breaking into a mobile phone shop and stealing several expensive items.
He was being held in police custody at Jaura station, awaiting a court date. However, Kushwaha apparently wasn’t keen to wait around.
In the footage, you can see the accused thief prying open the window grills of his cell, widening them enough so that he can slip through.
He then attempts to shimmy his way through the narrow gap, struggling slightly as he repositions himself. First he manages to get his arms through, using them in an attempt to pull himself out of the cell.
After about a minute or so of wriggling around, he eventually makes some progress and manages to reposition his shoulders to allow more of his body to slide through the gap.
Once his shoulders are freed it takes him hardly any time at all to escape, using his hands to crawl along the floor and pull his legs free.
He then stands slowly, looking around to see if anyone had heard him. He fiddles with his cell window, presumably to make it look as though nothing had happened, and then walks towards the exit.
Before he leaves the station though, he collects his slippers from the hallway – he’s obviously getting his money’s worth!
The grand escape was allowed to happen because three policemen fell asleep, leaving Kushwaha unsupervised for a period of time.
Superintendent Amit Sanghi has suspended the policemen and announced a reward of Rs. 5000 for information about the whereabouts of the accused.
One thief who didn’t have such a lucky escape was this man:
The unknown man got locked in the Royals Taverns Ltd. store on Market Street, Oldham, Greater Manchester, after the shop assistant locked up.
The thief then had to think on his feet, running upstairs and smashing the window open to climb out of it.
However, it didn’t go according to plan and he fell, crashing quite forcefully onto the ground.
The manager of the store later confirmed that the man was attempting to rob the store and was caught by the police as a result.
All in all, I’d say he had quite an unsuccessful day.
I think the moral of the story here, kids, is: a) don’t steal from shops and b) if you are arrested for some reason, don’t attempt to escape from prison because it will end badly.
