Sky Sports presenter and former Blue Peter host, Simon Thomas, has revealed his wife, Gemma, has tragically passed away, after being diagnosed with cancer.

Thomas posted on Twitter to say he was ‘crushed with indescribable pain’ after the death of his 40-year-old wife due to acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) – a cancer of the blood which affects the bone marrow.

To make matters even more heartbreaking for Thomas, Gemma was only diagnosed with leukaemia three days ago, report the Mirror.

Simon’s tweet reads:

Today I am crushed with indescribable pain. Just three days after falling ill with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia, my dear wife Gemma passed away yesterday evening surrounded by her family and friends.

If you are a prayer – pray for my boy Ethan. 8yrs, precious and in bits. Thank you.

AML typically begins in the bone marrow but incredibly quickly moves into the blood, progressing rapidly, with the Myeloid cells interfering with the production of healthier blood cells.

Thomas’ career began in 1999 when he replaced Richard Bacon on Blue Peter.

After six years on the show, Thomas left in 2005 when he joined Sky Sports.
