Sometimes, man’s best friend gets a pretty bum deal. When a dog is saddled with a shitty owner, the only option is often to take them away and sort them out with a loving home.

Thankfully, there are hundreds of thousands of caring people willing to take these neglected dogs in, and give them the great life they deserve.

Last year, photographer Nicole Simone made it her mission to show the world how rescue dogs can change their owner’s lives with the Redemption Dogs project.

The project’s Facebook page is still going strong today, celebrating the loving bond between man and beast. With each picture posted, is a story about the dogs and the owners who took them in.

[Gaia] was found wandering in the forest with (likely) her sister, and has since settled into city life beautifully. Gaia has impacted my life tremendously, and its been like no other experience I know to watch her grow and learn so quickly.

[Lily] was born with a neurological issue that makes her hyperextend her legs when she walks and her original owners, who had wanted to breed her, didn’t want her anymore since she wouldn’t be profitable. I found Lily (then “Cookie”) on Petfinder and had a weird feeling that she would be my dog.

For being a 2 years old dog in an overpopulated kill shelter in the US, Cali was already on the list to be killed when the THS rescued her and put her available for adoption at an event in Toronto that we [Cali’s owners] attended. She will always find a way to get our attention and to make herself comfortable cuddling as close to us as she can. When I am on the computer she will nudge my hands off the keyboard asking for love.

Marley was found on the streets of Jamaica and rescued by a wonderful woman who worked with Just Paws Animal Rescue to bring her over to the Toronto area. She is well known around our condo complex for her crawl. She lays down on the ground and stretches out as long as she can from front paw to back paw. She then slithers forward in the grass. Everyone gets a good giggle from it.

She was on death row and she wasn’t my first choice, but something wanted us to be together and she ended up with me and I can’t imagine myself with out her. I think that’s pretty unique. She’s content to spend the entire day in bed with me when I can’t leave it. She’ll just snuggle up beside me with her head in the pillow.

She’s my best friend.
