A teaser trailer for the critically acclaimed Sons Of Anarchy spin-off series has finally dropped and it has us very excited.
Ever since the SAMCRO rode off into the sunset back in 2014, fans of the series have been clamouring for some kind of show to fill the void.
The announcement of a spin-off series was made back in January and it had fans salivating at the mouth at the prospect of another wild trip on the open road, this time with the Mayan MC charter.
Set to a Spanish cover of the Rolling Stones’ Paint It Black, we see the crew of the infamous Mayans MC, a rival biker gang to SAMCRO in the original series, blazing down a desert highway.
The new 10-episode spin-off will be set in a post-Jax Teller world, where we follow the story of EZ Reyes – a former golden boy now fresh out of prison. As a prospect in the Mayan MC charter on the California-Mexico border, he’ll carve out his new outlaw identity.
The spin-off series, which is the brain-child of SOA creator Kurt Sutter, and writer Elgin James, will premiere first in the States on FX – and takes place on the 10th anniversary of the original series. A UK premiere date is still to be confirmed.
Speaking about the show to The Hollywood Reporter, FX president of original programming Nick Grad, explained:
Kurt Sutter is a master storyteller and Mayans MC has the raw energy and intensity that are hallmarks of his signature style.
Thanks to Kurt, co-creator Elgin James and this amazing cast, Mayans MC builds on the legacy of Sons of Anarchy, taking it in a thrilling new direction that we can’t wait for the world to see.
Furthermore, the hotly anticipated Mayans MC isn’t the only show from the SOA world heading to our screens, as both an official sequel and prequel projects have been given the green light too.
During an interview on the Tom Arnold podcast 100% Honest… Pretty Much, Sutter revealed the series is envisioned as one of four chapters.
This puts the original SOA seasons as chapter one and Mayans MC as chapter two. At this point, the upcoming seasons could represent further chapters.
The prequel and sequel projects will focus on Jax’s family and after his death.
Speaking on the podcast Sutter said:
I have a sense of ‘Sons’ being four chapters. If ‘Sons’ was the first chapter than I see the Mayans as the second chapter. [The new show is] present day, it’s after the death of Jax Teller.
While Mayans MC will be its own separate entity, Sutter said:
We’re going to play the reality of that last day and the events that happened with who he [Jax] killed that day and the impact and perhaps the trickle down that may have had on Northern Cali.
So it won’t have a direct impact on the Mayans but we make reference to it in the pilot so we can play the reality of it.
He also spoke about the newly announced prequel, saying:
I think at some point we’ll find a way to shine a little light on perhaps on John Teller’s manuscript, if the Mayans, if we’re lucky enough to continue and then what I would do is not directly but I would use that as a potential launching point to do the prequel.
The First 9 — it would begin in Vietnam with John Teller and Piney Winston and it would be about them coming back to America and ideally to do each episode have a new member join but end it at the end of that so that maybe at that point Gemma’s there but it’s before Jax is born.
I don’t want to step on the mythology that we know but we kind of lay track to the beginning and then stop.
As reported by THR, the journey to the hotly anticipated spin-off hasn’t been an easy one. While the show was first announced in August 2015, its pilot was originally set to go out in December 2016.
However, news then broke how the pilot needed to be completely reshot with several roles recast – it also saw Sutter take a step back and Norberto Barba brought into the fold.
