GettyA Spanish town has voted to redefine pets as ‘non-human residents’, effectively giving cats and dogs human rights.
The town council of Trigueros del Valle voted overwhelmingly to pass the new legislation, which has been hailed by animal rights campaigners as a great day for humans and non-humans alike.
Mayor Pedro Perez Espinosa said:
Dogs and cats have been living among us for over a 1,000 years. And the mayor must represent not just the human residents but must also be here for the others.
The new act includes a provision that would ban any action that causes the mutilation or death of a non-human resident, which means bull fighting would become illegal.
Well, at least no more American tourists are going to get mauled.
