The speech that would have been made if the Apollo 11 moon landings had been a failure has been released by the US National Archives.
This week marks the 46th anniversary of the moment man finally stepped foot on the moon. Barack Obama described the event as a “moment of human achievement that will never be forgotten,” but this speech reveals what the president at the time, Richard Nixon, would have had to deliver if everything went tits up.
The speech begins:
“Fate has ordained that the men who went to the moon to explore in peace will stay on the moon to rest in peace. These brave men, Neil Armstrong and Edwin Aldrin, know that there is no hope for their recovery. But they also know that there is hope for mankind in their sacrifice.”
US National Archives Fortunately it never had to be delivered, and Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin have gone down in history for their giant leap for mankind.
And to top it all off, everyone’s favourite fop-haired cheeky northern genius chap, Professor Brian Cox, has been setting conspiracy theorists straight on Twitter.
