Comic book legend and pop culture creator Stan Lee has died.

Lee was responsible for the creation of many Marvel characters we know and love today, including Iron Man, Thor, Spider-Man and the X-Men.

He, along with Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko, are essentially responsible for the superhero genre of comics and films as we know it.

The news of Stan Lee’s passing was broken by his daughter J.C. who confirmed to TMZ the sad news.

An ambulance was reportedly sent to Lee’s Hollywood Hills home on early Monday morning and he was rushed to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center where he sadly died.

Without Lee, the world would not have The Avengers or The Defenders, or even the old-school Blade.

In February, the legend revealed he was fighting pneumonia in a personal message to his fans.

In the video, he was noticeably more subdued than his normal energetic self, though reassured fans he was getting better:

In 2012, Lee underwent a procedure to insert a pacemaker, cancelling Comic-Con appearances in the process.

Since then, he’d recuperated and attended the San Diego Comic-Con in 2017.

Stan’s wife of almost 70 years, Joan Lee, died in July 2017 of complications from a stroke, aged 95.

Lee had a cameo in every single Marvel Cinematic Universe film to date and even had fan theories dedicated to his appearances.

Stan is survived by his daughter Joan Celia.

Our thoughts are with his family and friends.

Rest in peace.
