Each artist began to explore his individual response, and collectively, we began to answer, with our words and art. Out of our brainstorming sessions emerged visual imagery of where we might want to go and what it would look like when we got there. We were not merely illustrating scenes that already existed: we were initiating storytelling concepts through the visual images themselves.

Posted on their official site, each artwork reveals points from across the film’s development, from early pieces like these which reveal how radically different the film so easily could have been…

And then there are others which you’re more likely to recognise from the film itself – although that certainly doesn’t make them any less impressive.

Probably the most intriguing piece is a man dressed as a Jedi being put through torture, with a cloaked figure standing over him – we presume it’s Kylo Ren.

But did this reveal that the film’s lead was meant to be a male Jedi character? And is that unhelmeted stormtrooper an early version of Finn? Who knows.
