Warning: Star Wars Spoilers Ahead… Sort Of

Lucasfilm

You probably haven’t noticed this week but a little independent film about magic space wizards going to war with a corrupt regime has been released this week.

Of course, I’m talking about the second instalment of the new Star Wars trilogy, The Last Jedi, and you’re probably doing your damnedest to do avoid any and all type of spoilers and I don’t blame you for that.

However, if your one of the early birds who has seen the film already (such as myself, I snuck out of the staff party to go catch a late night showing – because that’s my style) you will have noticed a hidden connection between the sci-fi epic and another incredible piece of pop culture… Game Of Thrones.

There’s already an obvious connection with actress Gwendoline Christie who plays Captain Phasma in Star Wars: The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi and Brienne of Tarth in Game Of Thrones.

However, there’s an even subtler connection between the two franchise which only the most attentive viewers would’ve noticed.

One of the new locations in The Last Jedi is the planet of Canto Bight, which is home to a sprawling casino city. It’s basically a mecca for the questionably rich and famous in the Star Wars galaxy.

What you may have failed to notice is the city’s architecture bares a striking resemblance to Westero’s capital city, King’s Landing. This is because they share the same film location.

Both Canto Bight and King’s Landing are shot in the high-walled city of Dubrovnik, Croatia. Since being recognised as one of the main filming locations for HBO’s popular fantasy show tourism in in the city has skyrocketed.

Which is both a good and bad thing. The tourism boom obviously means more money going into the city and therefore the country, which is great for their GDP.

However, this also means they have to deal with overzealous GoT fans and pissed up British tourists creating a nuisance while on a stag or hen-do.

It probably won’t make the situation any better now Star Wars fans have found out it’s the location for The Last Jedi.

UNILAD reviewed Star Wars: The Last Jedi this week and we gave it a rather impressive five out of five.

We said it was:

It’s exciting and exhilarating with so many twists and turns that it’s impossible to predict what will happen next.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is out now in cinemas across the UK.
