A woman who halved her regular online shopping order after her husband died received a very unexpected response from the supermarket she was ordering from.

Linda Heald’s husband, David, died from heart disease just a day before their 23rd wedding anniversary on December 22 – the day she had asked for her delivery.

After calling to cancel half the order, staff at the city’s Savile Street branch – where she had been placing orders for over two years – immediately leaped into action.

Pensioner Linda was surprised by Tesco when her regular delivery driver, Liam Mellor, turned up on her doorstep with her reduced shopping but also a card signed by staff, a box of chocolates, a bottle of wine and flowers.

Linda, 66 from Sheffield, South Yorks, said:

It was really nice of Liam – he’s a nice young lad.

He turned up with all these gifts and I didn’t even know his name – but it was just so kind of him.

He even said if I needed anything to just get in touch with the store.

A Tesco spokesperson said:

We believe every little helps and that’s why our delivery driver, Liam, wanted to surprise his regular customer, Linda, following her sad news in the run up to Christmas.

He is delighted she enjoyed her flowers and he’s looking forward to helping her with future deliveries.

What an amazing move from the staff.
