Never-before-heard tapes have revealed how unhappy Princess Diana was just weeks into her marriage to Prince Charles in 1981.

The wedding, which drew in 750 million viewers took place at St Paul’s Cathedral in London. It seemed like the perfect union to those at home watching, but the Princess of Wales was suffering deeply behind closed doors.

Away from the glare of photographers and journalists, Diana was fighting depression and eating disorders, at times even contemplating suicide.

In the tapes, released almost 20 years after her untimely death in Paris in 1997, Diana describes what she was experiencing during the salad days of her marriage.

As reported by the Mirror, Diana said:

I was so depressed, I was trying to cut my wrists with razor blades.

The tapes are believed to have been recorded in 1991 and are being included in the republished edition of Andrew Morton’s book ‘Diana – Her True Story’.

She said:

I got terribly, terribly thin. I came down early to seek treatment, not because I hated Balmoral, but because I was in such a bad way.

Speaking about her wedding day, she commented:

On the day, there was great anticipation. Happiness because the crowds buoyed you up – but I don’t think I was happy. I just absolutely thought I was the luckiest girl in the world. I thought he was going to look after me. Well, was I wrong on that assumption!

Princess Diana died on August 31, 1997 in Paris of injuries sustained from a car crash.
