Tattoos can be a fairly divisive form of expression, but it’s pretty much impossible to criticise the work of one Brazilian artist, who has been turning the scars of domestic violence victims into works of art for free.

Yep, completely free of charge in a bid to restore the confidence of innocent victims, and to raise awareness surrounding domestic violence.

Flavia Carvalho of Curitiba, Brazil, started the service following a cover-up appointment two years ago.

The 31-year-old’s client had a large scar on her abdomen, with a painful backstory. The woman in question had been stabbed in a nightclub with a switchblade, after turning down the unwanted advances of a man.

After seeing how moved her client was with the result, Carvalho immediately wanted to do more for victims of similar circumstances.

She has now transformed the scars and lives of many women, sharing their story along with before and after pictures via her facebook.

The project has been called ‘A Pele da Flor’, or ‘The Skin of the Flower’, and is also offered to women who have undergone mastectomies.

Carvalho has played down her actions, and insists that it is only a small action in response to a major problem.

She said:

It is a grain of sand; the world is full of things that need to be addressed. We have a long way to go regarding protecting women against violence.

Talented, generous, and modest. Hats must go off to this wonderful woman.
