Tesco Is Banning Ribena And Capri Sun As Part Of A Fight Against Childhood Obesity

Tesco is pulling Ribena and Capri Sun from it’s shelves in September, supposedly as a bid to tackle childhood obesity.

Timed just right for when the kids go back to school after the summer holidays, we will no longer be able to buy the products from the supermarket giants.

Soft drinks buying manager for Tesco, David Beardmore, said:

This is part of our 10-point plan against obesity and we have decided that from September we will only sell no-added-sugar drinks in the kids’ juice category.

Most of the suppliers are supportive of it and understand what we are doing.

Fair enough, but it’s a bit like tidying the deck chairs on the Titanic.

Soft drinks will still be sold, like Coca Cola and Pepsi… Chocolate… Sweets… Fatty processed foods… Cakes…

Unsurprisingly, Malcolm Clark, the coordinator of the Children’s Food Campaign said that the move is a ‘positive step’, but that more needs to be done.

To be fair, they are actively doing something, after recently removing sweets from their counters (but keeping them in other parts of stores), and a little is better than nothing, but still.

Both Ribena and Capri Sun are, well, really nice drinks! Getting rid of them seems a bit daft to me. Perhaps parents should be educated a bit more on sugar content and healthy diets, rather than just getting rid of certain products. Especially as they aren’t doing anything about Coca Cola!

Plus, who wants to see these guys struggling and out of work?!

Do you reckon it’s doing much?
