Residents in Texas who are not evacuating a coastal town ahead of Hurricane Harvey making landfall are being asked to write their social security number on their arms to help identify their bodies.
Patrick Rios the mayor of Rockport in Texas has said that residents should prepare for the worst ahead of the hurricane which has been described as the most powerful since Hurricane Katrina.
At a press conference on Friday morning Mayor Rios said:
We’re suggesting if people are going to stay here, mark their arm with a Sharpie pen with their name and Social Security number as a way for people to identify themselves in case something happens to them during the major hurricane.
We hate to talk about things like that. It’s not something we like to do but it’s the reality, people don’t listen.
Rios explained that 60 per cent of Rockport has been evacuated and that he anticipates they’ll be at least ten casualties.
Across Texas people are being warned to move inland as Hurricane Harvey makes its way along the coast.
All across the Lone Star State people are taking precautions against the storm, in Corpus Christi residents who refused to evacuate have been warned to boil water before washing in it or consuming it to kill off any bacteria present in the water.
Meanwhile Greg Abbott the Texan govenor had warned that Hurricane Harvey would be a major disaster with violent winds, massive rainfall, all on top of storm surges up to 13 feet battering the state.
The National Weather Service has warned there will be difficult days ahead.
