Starting January 1st, licensed gun owners in Texas will be allowed to openly carry their weapons in most public places – that sounds safe.
Right now, the law requires licensed gun owners to keep their firearms hidden and out of sight, mostly because seeing a random person with a weapon can be quite frightening to rational people.
However, new laws, presumably put in place by irrational people, will permit owners to carry their gun in plain view, openly in a belt or in a shoulder holster.
The decision comes just a few months after President Obama appealed for greater gun control in the US after the Umpqua Community College shooting in Oregon back in October.
President Obama lamented the shootings saying:
I hope and pray that I don’t have to come out again during my tenure as president to offer my condolences to families in these circumstances. But based on my experience as president, I can’t guarantee that. And that’s terrible to say.
The stats don’t lie, and the US remains the developed country with the highest rate of gun deaths.
But if you think the open carry laws sound stupid it gets so much worse.
Police are worried about asking gun carriers about licenses because they want to avoid harassment lawsuits, essentially meaning would-be criminals could carry guns without fear of getting caught.
Austin Police Department training commander, Andy Michael, said:
We’re going to assume they’re a license holder, probably.
You couldn’t make this shit up…
