After police in Thailand arrested a suspect in connection with the bombing of the country’s capital, they took some seriously unusual steps to reward themselves.
They decided to keep the reward money that was offered to the public for any information that led to the capture of a suspect – because they managed to make the arrest without any help.
The £54,000 will be given to the officers who were involved in the apprehension of the man they were seeking.
Independent National police chief Somyot Poompanmoung spoke to journalists at a press conference, with the money clearly visible, and claimed:
This money should be given to officials who did their job.
This arrest, I confirm is due purely to the work of police.
The bombing, on August 17th at Bangkok’s Erawan Shrine killed 20 people, with the male suspect arrested but not yet charged.
