Zimmerman, a member of the neighbourhood watch, infamously killed Martin back in 2012. However, he claimed he was acting in self defence and was cleared of unlawfully killing the 17-year-old.

Now, the 32-year-old plans on selling the gun in an online auction to fight back against Hilary Clinton’s ‘anti-gun rhetoric’, the BBC reports.

The tasteless auction will be a one-day event and opens today at 15:00 GMT (11:00 EDT).

Zimmerman is hoping to cash in on the gun’s terrible history, describing it as an ‘American icon,’ and he plans on opening the bidding for the 9mm pistol at $5,000 (£3,464).

When asked about the sale by Florida television channel WOFL as to what he would say to those opposed to the sale, Zimmerman said: “They’re not going to be bidding on it, so I couldn’t care less about them.”

The Martin family refused to comment on the auction but they did release a statement.

They said:

The Trayvon Martin Foundation is committed to its mission of ending senseless gun violence in the United States.

This election season, we are laser focused on furthering that mission.

Outrage over the Trayvon Martin case led to protests in several cities across the U.S. and ultimately to the birth of the Black Lives Matter movement.
