It’s hard to believe that it’s been 17 years since The Blair Witch Project hit our screens and invented a whole new terrifying horror genre.
The found footage film retells the tale of three student filmmakers who disappeared in some woods back in 1994, while filming a documentary about a local legend known as the Blair Witch.
Watching it as a kid, it essentially consisted of me putting my hands in front of my face for the entire duration of the movie and being scared shitless for days after.
And it now seems the unexpected sequel will have much the same effect, with the addition of raised blood pressure and high-pitched crying.
Simply titled as Blair Witch, the film takes place in the present day as the brother of Heather, the girl who disappeared in the 1999 original, adventures off into the Black Hills Forest of Maryland in search of answers about the mysterious disappearance of his sister all those years ago.
If you’re wondering why this seems to have come out of nowhere, it’s because this project was filmed in secret by Director Adam Wingard and had previously been given the working title The Woods.
It wasn’t until Comic-Con that The Woods/Blair Witch ruse was revealed.
Wingard’s past work includes the slasher film You’re Next, action horror The Guest, and the series of found-footage shorts V/H/S, so it’s almost guaranteed that this film is going to be mega fucked up.
The makers of Blair Witch claims it is one of the scariest movies ever made and now the trailer has dropped, I can clarify that this could well be the case.
The two minute clip includes some pretty creepy goings-on as soon as the group inevitably gets lost, including humanoid stick figures being suspended from trees all around them, unknown forces shaking their tent, and of course, a lot of startled running.
Nope, no, nah ah, no way. I’m out.
