There’s a strange new drug hitting house and electronic nights, but it’s probably not what you were expecting…

According to the indy100, chocolate is fast becoming the number one choice of psychoactive substance at raves across Europe.

That’s right, events such as ‘Lucid’ from Alchemy Eros have popularised snorting chocolate as a recreational drug.

According to Ozy, revellers at parties are enjoying cocoa – taken in drink, pill or powdered form – as an alternative high at day-time raves which do not serve alcohol.

And people are saying that the positive effects of chocolate are actually pretty amazing.

The raw cocoa is flooding users with happy endorphins as it enters the blood stream, and then magnesium – which is a muscle relaxant.

The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition stated that cocoa also contains flavanols which can improve blood circulation and cognitive function and it is not technically mind altering enough to constitute drug status.

Lucid’s manifesto says:

We do not serve alcohol, but this does not make us ‘anti’ anything. We have local artisans and culinary adventurers serving various high vibe medicines such as raw Cacao, super-food smoothies, herbal concoctions, vegan cuisine and much more.

But is there a dark side? Apparently it’s not as harmless as you may think – a 2012 study found that chocolate could actually have the same addictive power as opium.

So could chocolate be next on the government’s legal high hit list? Will a day come when we will be driven to buy a Mars Bars for an inflated price while looking over our shoulders.

We’ll have to just wait and see…
