North Korea is not really considered a holiday destination, to say the least.

But earlier this year Kim Jong-un built a visitor’s centre in a bid to attract tourists, and of course foreign currency.

The supreme leader also relaxed border controls for trips between China and north-west North Korea.

But for people who have actually been to the secretive state, they’re making one thing clear: the hotels are the stuff of nightmares.

Located mainly in the city of Pyongyang, a city designed to be the envy of Western countries, these hotels have everything from wooden-plate beds to locks on fire escapes. Basically everything you would want in a hotel, right?

Well, at least there’s friendly staff – sort of. And the food is edible:

Moral of the story? You pretty much get what you’d expect from a hotel in North Korea.
