It seems like years ago now that viewers around the world became gripped by the story of Steven Avery as Making A Murderer hit our screens.

The documentary followed the trial and conviction of Steven Avery and his nephew Brendan Dassey for the murder of local photographer Teresa Halbach, and led to a new campaign to challenge the pair’s convictions.

Now Netflix has confirmed the show will definitely be returning to our screens with new episodes following all the recent developments, reports The Mirror.

But what should we expect from the new episodes? Here’s everything you need to know…

How many will there be?

A statement from Laura Ricciardi and Moira Demos – executive producers and directors of the show – referred to new episodes, not an entire season, so at the moment we’re not sure how many installments there’ll be.

The first series had ten, one hour long episodes, but the new programmes may not stick to the same format, with reports there could well be longer one-off style shows.

What will the episodes focus on?

Netflix has confirmed the episodes will follow developments in the investigations of both defendants’ legal teams as they try to quash the convictions.

The first series was filmed over the course of ten years, covering 30 years worth of material, while the majority of the new episodes will focus mainly on the last year.

Netflix has confirmed that Avery’s new lawyer Kathleen Zellner and Dassey’s legal team, led by Laura Nirider and Steve Drizin, will all feature, giving exclusive, close-up access to the investigations.

Family members and others close to the case will return, although unfortunately Avery’s 2007 defence team of Dean Strang and Jerry Buting have not been mentioned as of yet…

When will it start?

A start date has not been confirmed yet – the official Making A Murderer account tweeted fans who were asking when it would be out saying simply: “No premiere date yet. We’ll keep you posted.”
