If you’ve ever been stranded on the side of the road with a dead car battery, this trick could change your life.
According to Instructables user and DIY pro ShakeTheFuture, all you need to jump-start your car (given that it’s a manual) is a rope and a jack.
That’s right, no jumper cables and no need to flag down a stranger to help give you a push – just you, a rope, and some sheer strength.
Here’s how you do it.
Jack up one of your car’s front tires.
YouTubeSet the parking break and put the car in third gear.
YouTubeYou won’t hear the car running if the battery is dead, but you’ll need to put your key in the ACC or ‘On’ position.
YouTubeTake the rope and wrap it around your car wheel.
YouTubeThen pull.
YouTubeIf you pull hard enough, the car should start.

ShakeTheFuture was quick to point out though, that the trick will work best on petrol cars. He added that after trying it on a diesel, it didn’t work.
So if you’ve got a car that fits the criteria for this trick, it may be smart to keep a rope in the boot just in case.
