Fighting with your partner can actually have some pretty harmful effects on your body.

Although the occasional disagreement is inevitable in a relationship, those who go through long periods of stress due to arguments could be putting their body at risk of health problems, including high blood pressure, which can lead to a higher risk of diabetes, heart attacks and strokes.

Mic has put together this handy infographic, detailing exactly what happens to your wellbeing when you accidently call out Chuck Norris’ name during sex and get into a heated fight, or whatever it is you argue with your partner about.

Here’s those points:

Stress Skyrockets:

Stress during an argument activates amygdala, which releases higher levels of cortisol, the hormone that causes stress.

You Strain Your Voice:

Screaming during a long argument can cause damage to your vocal cords.

Your Breathing Quickens And Your Chest Becomes Tight:

When you get angry, your blood pressure rises and your lungs expand to take in extra oxygen.

Blood Pressure Spikes:

With your heart pumping faster, your blood pressure rises.

You Feel A Rush:

When Couples Fight, they get a surge of epinephrine and norepinephrine in their blood – the same hormones that are released when you go on a roller coaster.

Your Immune System Gets Out Of Whack:

Too much stress over a long period of time can cause the cells that help protect against disease to decrease in function.

Your Heart Beats Faster:

Stress causes your heart to work overtime.

You Clench Your Teeth:

Getting angry at your significant other can result in muscle tension in your head, neck, shoulders and jaw.

Doesn’t sound great, does it? Luckily fighting every now and again is totally normal, and can be quite healthy. It can serve as a useful way to remind each other why you fell in love, strengthening your bond together.

Just remember to keep calm. Deep breaths everyone. Feel the stress ebbing away.
