BBCA new hospital super computer gives a very scary vision of the future, with an ability to tell patients if they’re going to die with 95 per cent accuracy.
It’s kind of like that scene in Big Fish where the witch’s magic glass eye tells scared children how they’ll meet their demise – except this is terrifyingly real.
The computer, in a hospital in Boston, uses 250,000 patient records from the last 30 years to make its speedy and crazily spot on predictions.
Speaking to the BBC, Dr Steve Horng, of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, said:
We can predict with 96 per cent confidence when patients are facing a high probability of dying. If the computer says you’re going to die, you probably will die in the next 30 days. This artificial intelliegence is really about the augmenting of doctors’ ability to take care of patients.
The computer can also sometimes accurately discover what is wrong with a patient before a doctor has even made their diagnosis.
As if everyone didn’t already fear death enough! Still, I suppose this piece of kit would give you time to get your affairs in order, so that’s something, right?
