One employee at Smokey Barque BBQ in Frankfort, Illinois, thought that he was just having a normal day at work, chatting with his customers, until one customer he had been talking to paid his bill.
Brendan Motill was waiting tables when he gave one man a bill that amounted to $20.31, which is roughly £13, and at first didn’t notice anything was amiss with the paid cheque.
Then he realised that a tip had been left – and not just any old tip. The guy had tipped him $1,000 or around £640, which was a 5000% mark up. Pretty generous.
After receiving the tip, Brendan was shocked and claimed:
My jaw dropped. I couldn’t do anything. I was in shock.
He was really humble and I tried to go back out there instantly and he was gone.
It’s an amazing act of kindness from a stranger, who was clearly trying to make a difference in someone’s life, and given most waiters and other hospitality staff rely on tips to make a living, it’s little wonder Brendan was so grateful.
This was the note in full:
Brendan,
Thanks for your kind service! You’re doing a great job as a server. I’m not sure what your hopes and dreams are in this life, but I hope this tip helps.
My hope is that people were more peaceful to each other. The world can be so negative and violent, I commit random acts of kindness to let others know there can be another way. Peace be with you brother!
The mystery tipper went on his way after leaving the huge sum, but will probably be in for a healthy dose of good karma at some point soon.
