Tom Hanks Struggled To Record Toy Story 4 Ending

I thought no movie scene could destroy me more than when Jessie the cowgirl sings When Somebody Loves You in Toy Story 2.

The sight of the little doll reminiscing over being discarded by her beloved Emily was almost too much to bear and made me feel extremely guilty about the childhood toys I myself have forgotten over the years.

However, Toy Story 3 actually managed to outdo this moment; with a farewell between Woody and Andy which brings tears to my eyes like no other movie goodbye.

Toy Story films batting us between laughing hysterically and crying uncontrollably has become somewhat of a Pixar tradition. However, there is surely no way Toy Story 4 could top the emotional rollercoaster of that furnace scene, could it?

Unfortunately for those of us who aren’t mad keen on weeping noisily at the cinema, the next instalment may prove a little tricky, feelings wise.

Even Tom Hanks – aka Woody himself – reportedly struggled to record the final scene, which he has intriguingly described as being a ‘moment in history’.

Speaking on The Chris Evans Breakfast Show, the 62-year-old actor revealed:

It was the first time that we were going to be recording the end of the movie, and Toy Story [4] is going to have an impactful ending.

He added:

The way you record Toy Story, you’re in a room with the team that has created it. When I went in for my last day of recording, I wanted to have my back to them, because usually you’re facing him so he can look right up and you can talk about it.

But I didn’t want to see them and pretend they couldn’t see me. When I realised what they were going for, I realised, ‘Oh, this is a moment in history’.

Tim Allen, who lends his voice to the one and only Buzz Lightyear, has previously spoken about his own struggles getting through this mysterious last scene.

Speaking on The Talk in September, Allen confessed:

I gotta resist getting emotional. I don’t want to give it away, but this is an incredibly great story.

It is so emotional, it’s so funny, it’s so big, the idea they’ve come up with, I’m startled. I couldn’t even get through the last scene.

I would love to be a Washington leaker. I just can’t do it. I can’t give any more away. They’ve got great characters but a couple of scenes toward the end were really hard to get through.

Toy Story 4 will reportedly follow the adventures of Woody and Buzz as they go looking for Woody’s lost shepherdess love, Bo Peep.

Now, as we know from Toy Story 3, Bo was no longer a resident of Andy’s room by the time the gang were accidentally donated to Sunnyside Daycare.

The circumstances of her absence (yard sale/donated/broken?) were left undisclosed, as were her whereabouts.

Oh goddamnit, I don’t think I’m ready for this one…

You can catch Toy Story 4 in cinemas as of June 21, 2019.
