SWNSA Tory councillor has been suspended after he posted a sickening comment about the Jo Cox Memorial Fund to Facebook yesterday.
Posting from what is believed to be his own Facebook page, Conservative Dominic Peacock shared a link to an article about the memorial fund for Jo Cox, which has just surpassed £1.2 million, captioning the story: ‘I’ve just donated the steam off my piss’.
The councillor for East Riding, who is a prominent supporter of leaving the EU, posted the status into a closed group called Vote Leave Beverley & Holderness, Haltemprice & Howden, however he deleted the post within seconds, reports The Independent.
But, as with all things on the Internet, the vile comment had been seen and screen-grabbed already and quickly began to circulate online.
FacebookAlmost immediately, Peacock posted again onto Facebook, seemingly realising he had potentially just ruined his career, saying: “I’ve deleted my offensive comment I shouldn’t have put it on in the first place – I won’t make excuses.”
He also claimed that he was ‘sick and tired’ of Cox’s death being ‘used against the Brexit cause’.
Stephen Parnaby, a leader of the East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said in a statement:
Following inappropriate and offensive comments made on social media relating to the sad and tragic death of Jo Cox MP, I have suspended Cllr Dominic Peacock from the East Riding of Yorkshire Council Conservative Group with immediate effect.
I shall be reporting this to a meeting of the full Group and my recommendation will be that he be expelled.
PACox, who would have turned 42 today, was MP for Batley and Spen, while also a devoted mother-of-two.
She was tragically shot and stabbed outside her constituency surgery in Birstall, near Leeds, on Thursday.
A man known as Tommy Mair, 52, from Birstall, is the main suspect after he was caught at the scene of the crime.
Mair appeared on Monday at the Old Bailey via videolink charged with murder, grievous bodily harm, possession of a firearm with intent to commit an indictable offence, and possession of an offensive weapon.
PAWhen asked to confirm his name, Mair said: “My name is death to traitors, freedom for Britain.”
A fundraising page was subsequently set up in Cox’s honour and has already exceeded over £1.2 million in donations which will go to Hope Not Hate, the Royal Voluntary Service and The White Helmets.
