On Saturday morning waitress Kelly Carter was simply going about her day as she does every Saturday.

Serving food at Anita’s restaurant where she works in Ashburn, Virginia, Kelly served two white people – a couple who seemed to be loving their time at the New Mexico themed eating house, reports ITV News.

In fact, the couple enjoyed their time at Anita’s cafe so much that they left a lovely little note reading ‘great service’ below their $30.52 receipt.

However, the note didn’t end there as below the ‘great service’ compliment, the couple disgustingly added: ‘don’t tip black people’.

Understandably in a lot of shock, Kelly spoke to NBC about the encounter, saying:

It was just total shock, that’s all that I can say. I looked at the receipt three times because I was so shocked, never ever being a server have I seen that.

The local chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Coloured People (NAACP) found out about the hateful incident and posted a photo of the receipt to Twitter.

Accompanying the Tweet was text which read:

Hatred will not be tolerated and we will not keep quiet. This has been confirmed and did happen per Mgr @ Anita’s in Ashburn.

The manager of Anita’s, Tom Tellez, spoke out about the sick note, saying:

It’s appalling, disheartening, outrageous – all of the above. Though it’s kind of in line with the political landscape.

Fortunately, however, if anything can be fortunate about such a horrible incident, a fundraising page was set up for Carter and at the time of writing has raised almost $3,000 (£2,450).

When will people realise that hatred merely breeds hatred?
