In August 2014, the area was attacked by ISIS and the militants killed hundreds of people and captured 3,000 Yazidi women and young girls.

The group locked up their captors and forced many to convert to Islam, in what has been described as the largest kidnapping of its kind this century.

Channel 4’s new Dispatches special, “Escape from Isis”, filmed an underground network operating in Sinjar mountain.

The crew was given unprecedented access as they followed the mission of Khaleel, a local lawyer, who has formed a local team that attempts to get all the women safely back home.

During filming, the Dispatches team witnessed the biggest rescue to date when 34 Yazidis managed to escape the clutches of ISIS and walked across miles of ISIS-controlled territory to safety.

Six weeks after the rescue, Khaleel was informed that a new massacre had occurred in the town from where the 34 captives had fled – a reminder of the terrifying acts being perpetrated by ISIS across the region.
