In an hour long interview with Charlie Rose, Lucas spoke about everything from his and Disney’s branching vision to the deal itself. The director has always been protective of his series often referring to them as his ‘kids’ and it seems he doesn’t look back well on the deal with Disney saying they ‘weren’t keen to have [him] involved’.
DisneyLucas also opened up about why he and Disney were split on their decisions for the franchise’s future:
They looked at the stories, and they said, ‘We want to make something for the fans’. They decided they didn’t want to use those stories, they decided they were going to do their own thing. They weren’t that keen to have me involved anyway — because they’re not going to do what I want them to do. And I don’t have the control to do that anymore, and all I would do is muck everything up. And so I said, ‘OK, I will go my way, and I’ll let them go their way’.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens has been a massive success in the weeks it has been out, breaking cinema records – it is already the ninth-highest box office performer ever with $1.23 billion (£830 million) in global receipts helping to make 2015 the highest grossing year in US box office history.
nerdbastards.comAlthough he says he’s now at peace with what happened, Lucas suggests that the style of the new movie isn’t to his taste:
[Disney] wanted to do a retro movie, I don’t like that. All those Star Wars films … I loved them, I created them, I’m very intimately involved in them, and I sold them to the white slavers that take these things and uh, and … [laughs]
